While visiting Wisconsin in November, I was fortunate enough to have friends Kenton and Rebecca request a session with with their newborn daughter, Mirabelle. Photography of infants is a process I find very meditative, if you can imagine. In my mind, you cannot go wrong. Babies will be babies and all I have to do is be there to capture the connection between an infant and her parents. I set aside a lot of time for photo sessions such as these so everyone, especially the parents, can relax in front of the camera and also be relaxed when they aren’t in front of the lens but on the sidelines while their baby is photographed. Once everyone is relaxed, it is such a natural process. This was a real treat since Mirabelle was a few days old. I felt newly introduced to her and discovering her likes and dislikes (When she’s alone, she prefers to pose on her tummy) was a true delight.

Sometimes life throws you one of those “Wait… What?” moments and you do what anyone else would do, and that would be to sit there for a moment wondering if you’re on candid camera. There I was, frittering away another afternoon with web design and photo editing when I saw that I had a new message via Model Mayhem.
I opened the message to find myself textually introduced to Ms. Deanna Deadly who explained that she was on (what I would call) a modeling tour through various states and Buffalo NY was an optional destination. Actually to clarify; Buffalo was between one shoot and the next and would have her passing through around 11pm, so she was wondering if we had any place where she could crash.
Small side note, Deanna Deadly was in this years Fetish Ball both in Dallas and D.C!
Cue my double take. I mean, many photographers will tell you that many models seem to have a phobia of their camera weilding counterparts. Escorts will be with them making sure we don’t try to get them naked, they won’t provide any contact information, etc etc…
Yet here is Deanna putting a lot of trust in me and asking if we have a spot. Which of course, we do. After chatting with the references she provided, we finalized the date and time she would be arriving to stay the night. I honestly wasn’t positive she would arrive, so when I got the call and she was at the door, it was somehow still a surprise!
After getting her a late night snack, we stayed up even longer just sitting around and chatting about whatever until someone (I don’t remember who) announced to everyone else that it was late and not only did we hope to do a shoot with Deanna the next day, we had two other models coming into the studio for two separate shoots. (yeesh!)
The next day, after some delicious breakfast omelettes, we dinked around for a while until it was really really time to do the shoot before Deanna had to leave. It was a lot of fun trying different things, I wish we had more time as she has such a unique look, there were a lot more things I would have liked to try.
Making another trip to Wisconsin for this year. Let the usual chaos begin!
I was cleaning up my laptop for the journey and stumbled across a few of my personal favorites..
Whisking through time and fashion periods, Rachel paused long enough in the living room for a red hot beautiful photoshoot.
I’ve been having a blast working with hair. It’s amazing to style someone who has hair that actually obeys any kind of orders I give it. My mess of tangles and curls can really only do about two things: Eat bobby pins and pretending to be properly straightened before trying to devour my face.
Rachel, as always, is incredible to work with. Not only does she bring a great energy to the shoot, she looks amazing in front of the camera.
I love how family and friends now give me gifts or donate items to be used in photoshoots. This shoot featured a rabbit fur jacket given to me by my grandmother. The beautiful red skirt was made by my mother and is so much fun to wear in general. The hat was given to me along with an amazing costume that I will keep secret for future photographic purposes.

It is always wonderful when people I have worked with approach me for another session. Both KateLynn and Zaftigg are fantastic women I have done shoots with in the past and it was amazing to work with both of them again, at once. My partner in crime and I were charged with creating a concept that was both strong enough to do these women justice and still let them be the stars of the show.
I’ve seen many incredible images in which ropes and suspension are used and I loved the idea of secured ropes allowing models to pose in ways that they could not likely do, relying on their own balance.
This shoot is likely to be one of my favorites. From the very start we had so much fun putting it all together and they were fantastic even though I know there were moments of much discomfort.
What is so great about KateLynn and Zaftigg is their natural ability to take the concept of a shoot and drive it forward with their own talent, bringing to life a concept we had hoped for but giving it such a vitality that I grin in delight like a happy dork when looking at the results. I love ropes and suspension and their effects (blame it on my love of Cirque Du Soleil) but the last thing I wanted were women who were bound and helpless.
Zaftigg and KateLynn were the perfect models for this idea. They radiate strength and beauty and it translates and speaks through the resulting images.
Visit the ol’ portfolio for the rest from this shoot!
One of the best things about photography, for me personally, is how often the random and awesome happen around you. There never is a shortage of surprises. Deanna contacted me as Buffalo New York was on the path of a grand modeling tour she was on. She stopped for the night and for food and a shoot (the whole studio had been frantically cleaned the day before of course) and then was on her way. It was great to work with Deanna and style her hair which is the most cooperative hair I have EVER been able to work with.
If you’ve come across my website and things seem a bit off, please be patient. I’m right smack in the middle of changing some things around. I can’t wait to reveal all the different features I have planned. Check back soon!
