August is already slipping by so quickly, I cannot believe how short this summer has felt. The garden is lush, green, and full right now with green beans taking center stage. Every other day we harvest at least ten pounds of beans. We even reached our “dog bean” quota halfway through the season and will have at least thirty pounds of frozen beans for them to enjoy over winter.

The Japanese Beetles are slowing down now, so soon we can take the protective netting off of our plum tree. Last year they ate nearly all the leaves off the tree and so this year we added protection to help it recover and it’s doing way better now. We decided to not place beetle traps this year and we saw close to the same amout of beetles as we always do. I don’t think the traps solve anything, at least not in a garden of our size.

This is the last year we will have the beds like this. The wood is warping and we’re ready to evolve our growing layout and techniques beyond the restrictions of these beds. I’m excited to see the difference and how much easier it will be to manage things.

It’s been a beautiful summer, I wish it would never end!
